Description

Monitoring health inequities in Ontario: Ontario Marginalization Index updates and products

The Centre for Urban Health Solutions at St. Michael's Hospital and Public Health Ontario (PHO) have updated the Ontario Marginalization Index (ON-Marg). ON-Marg is a widely-used tool for measuring neighbourhood-level marginalization, and this update allows for more recent and robust reporting of trends in population health inequities.

To facilitate the use of ON-Marg, PHO has developed interactive products to explore the relationship between health and area-based marginalization for the province, Local Integrated Health Networks and Public Health Units. These include an interactive map exploring the distribution of social determinants of health, and a series of new health equity Snapshots that summarize trends in health disparities across quintiles of marginalization.

This presentation will discuss how the ON-Marg has been updated and validated, as well as examine the need for a tool such as the Ontarion Marginalization Index and its potential impact on public health practice. Additionally, a demonstration of PHO’s new interactive tools will showcase how ON-Marg can be used to measure health inequities in Ontario.
